Hawthorn Berry is a woody thorny shrub found in the sparse forests of Europe and North America.
Its active ingredients are bioflavonoids (rutin, quercetin), triterpenoids, cyanogenic glycosides, amines (trimethylamine only in flowers), polyphenols, coumarins and tannins.
Hawthorn fruit is associated with increased endurance in patients with type II heart failure.
Studies have shown improvement in clinical symptoms (e.g. fatigue, palpitations, shortness of breath during exercise) as well as increased endurance and performance during physical exhaustion.
Traditionally, hawthorn has been used for heart-related conditions, regulating blood pressure and high cholesterol, reducing anxiety and worry, relieving symptoms of kidney stones, improving gastrointestinal infections, and treating varicose veins.
